Looking at the Expressive Paintings of Obi Chigozie

I first saw Obi Chigozie’s paintings at SAO and the Muse 3 exhibition earlier this month at SAO Café. I didn’t pay them much attention but they stayed with me. When I came across her works again online, I found her mainly expressive portraits of females somewhat haunting, an indictment of the society we live in? According to Arthouse Contemporary, “Emotion is a big influence on Obi and when studying her work, she intends to make the viewers feel the vehemence the subject carries.”

A University of Lagos Arts graduate, Chigozie first exhibition was as a student exhibitor at the Rasheed Gbadamosi Eko Art Expo 2017. Subsequently, her works have been featured at the first Affordable Art Fair held in Ibadan in 2018, The Studio Scout 2018 by Omenka Gallery, and she was Arthouse Contemporary’s artist of the month for July 2018.

I hope she’ll have another exhibition soon. Meanwhile, here are images of her works from Instagram.

Work by #ArtistoftheMonth Obi Chigozie (@gozie.o). See the link in bio for more. . The ”Black Eye” series focuses on domestic violence. It’s a thing of discomfort knowing that people live in fear and can't live their lives as they truly wish. It’s a thing of discomfort knowing that anger is channeled into fists and in turn people become punching bags. It’s a thing of discomfort knowing that people wake up in pain everyday and attempt to cover up their bruises. This series speaks for those who are victims with hopes they are granted freedom. – Obi Chigozie . Available work by #ArtistoftheMonth Obi Chigozie (@gozie.o). See the link in bio for more. . The "Existence" series focuses on a period in which one is existing as opposed to living. This body of work explores periods in life whereby one exists in the world but isn't alive in the full sense. Periods that consist of thoughts, prayers and bland days that feel never ending. This period also highlights the need to connect to something greater which can serve as a means of solace or escape. "Dual" as part of this series explores moving from a sober state to one of distress which is one of the main features of this period. – Obi Chigozie . "The Final Prayer" (Juvenile series) 3 x 3.5ft Oil on canvas 2018 ••• . The "Juvenile" series examines child marriage. Research shows 43% of girls in Nigeria are married off before their 18th birthday. 17% are married before they turn 15. . The prevalence of child marriage varies widely from one region to another, with figures as high as 76% in the North West region and as low as 10% in the South East. . Child marriage is driven by poverty, low education, perversion, patriarchy amongst many other things. The results of this are sexual abuse, emotional trauma, mental illness and others. . This work brings to cognizance the perils of child marriage in hopes of propelling societal change. This topic angers me and I hope girls everywhere can one day be born to make their own choices and lead their own lives without fear of abuse or trauma. #art #artist #oilpaint #oilpainting #painting #artoftheday #child #childmarriage #juvenile #africanartist #modernart #contemporaryart #contemporaryafricanart #obichigozie

"The Creation of Eve" is a 2-piece series that was influenced by a renowned painting, "The Creation of Adam", by Renaissance painter, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti. In this creation painting, Eve represents women of the world as bold and beautiful, not just by her physical appearance but by her poise and nature. My Eve is emotional, fierce, intelligent, kind hearted, strong and many more incredible things, which is how I see women in general. And as a woman myself, I want to look at Eve and feel confident and beautiful and want other women to feel the same way. ‘The Creation of Eve I & II is a symbol of strength, power, kindness, love, and other positive qualities present in man – very essence and being.” – Obi Chigozie .
