The name Jimo Bola Akolo is familiar to us all. It’s included in all literature on the early Zaria days; the days of Bruce Onobrakpeya, Yusuf Grillo, Uche Okeke, Simon Okeke, Demas Nwokolo et al—the brilliant, gifted, driven Zaria students that started the Nigerian art renaissance. But try finding any individual information on Akolo. While he’s named alongside other modernists, he’s consistently left out of the narratives. It’s not surprising that his 84th birthday on 20 September 2018 passed with no public attention whatsoever.
